Other Items Which You May Need To Go With Your Tent

Best Tent Air Conditioner

A tent air conditioner is a vital accompaniment to your tent. We would recommend looking at the portable choices. These will have a 6-8 hour battery life and can be charged quickly. These options have improved dramatically over the last couple of years and are now often better than the traditional models. I have a complete review of every model, make and type on the market which you should read – but for quick reference see the reviews below.

Tents with AC Opening Extras: Camping AC Stand

A camping stand is a sensible buy to accompany your tent and AC unit. You can protect the tent fabric whilst raising the AC unit off the floor allowing it to distribute air easily and more efficiently.

Frequently Asked Questions about Tent With AC Port

Should I buy a tent with AC port or E-port?

The honest answer is that it is up to personal preference. The benefit of an e-port tent is that you can connect other electrical devices to the campsite hook up. Furthermore, the quality of portable air conditioners has dramatically improved so the benefits of having a dedicated AC port are no longer as vital. That being said, if you are after a tent with an AC port and nothing else then a dedicated design is definitely worth looking at; especially if you already own a top-end AC unit.

What is the main benefit of a tent with air conditioning functions?

The benefit is that in those summer months you can use an air conditioning unit to keep you cool. It is worth noting that there are other important things a tent needs to make the AC unit efficient. This includes good ventilation and UV protective coating in the fabric.

What fabric is the best for my tent?

Most tents are made from Polyester or Nylon. These are great options as they are lightweight and are often cheaper than cotton/poly-cotton alternatives. Just make sure that the polyester/nylon has been treated with water-resistant chemicals because they are not naturally waterproof. A tent made from polyester also needs to be designed to be well-ventilated as the fabric is not a natural insulator. Please don’t think that polyester is not a great choice – it is – almost all manufacturers ensure that the fabric is well ventilated and waterproof.

What features are important in a tent?

  • Waterproof rating. This is called the hydrostatic head measurement. It is measured in millimeters and the higher the level the more waterproof the tent. Officially, a tent has to have a measurement of 1,500mm to be waterproof however this is unlikely to keep you dry in heavy rain.
  • Weight. If you are hiking or backpacking then you need to pick a lightweight tent which is easy to carry. If you are car camping then you could consider a larger and heavier tent which offers increased stability.
  • Size. A three person tent will sleep three people on their back. It will not be big enough for three people and all of their gear. If you are taking a lot of gear a good rule to follow is to pick a tent which is twice the size as the number of people using it.

How can I make my tent last?

There are a couple of easy things you can do to preserve your tent.

  • Make sure you use a tent footprint. This will protect the bottom of your tent from rocks and rough surfaces.
  • Clean off any dirt and debris after use. This will keep the fabric strong and prevent the waterproof coating from wearing off.
  • Pitch you tent on smooth, flat ground. This will prevent any abrasions from causing rips and tears in the fabric.
  • Make sure you erect the tent as per the manufactures instructions. Regardless of what you read on the internet or hear from other campers, the instruction guide is, and will always be, best practise.
  • Equally important as putting up the tent correctly, is taking it down and packing it away in the right way. When you do this try and ensure that the tent fabric is dry and clean – this will prevent mold from growing.
  • Do not put pressure or strain on the fabric. This will avoid it from tearing.
  • Make sure the tent poles have no sharp edges. If they do, cover them with tape. This will prevent any rips from occurring.

Can I make a AC port in my own tent?

Yes you can, but (and it is a huge but) you must take care when you do it. If you get this wrong you will ruin the fabric and the tent will no longer be functional. A rip in the fabric in the wrong place will affect the integrity of the tent. Instead of ‘ruining’ your current tent my honest advice would be to keep the old one as a spare and buy a new tent with AC port.

Is my tent with AC port only good for summer use?

It depends on the specifications of the tent. A quick way to check is to see how many seasons the tent has been designed for. This will either be one, two, three or four. If it is a one/two season tent then I would only advise using it in summer.

If you don’t know how many seasons the tent has been designed for check the waterproof rating. If it is under 1,500mm then it is a summer only tent. If it is 1,500-3,000 it is a 3-season tent (although be careful as it will not be fully waterproof in heavy rain). If it is over 3,000mm then you should be ok for all but the worst weather.

How do I keep my tent cool in the summer?

Even the best tent with an AC port will not, on its own, keep your tent cool. It will certainly help but to maximize its effect there are a number of really easy steps you can follow.

  • Make sure your tent is well ventilated. This means ensuring that a breeze can run in, and out of the tent. This can be done by opening doors or windows.
  • Pitch your tent in the shade. This will prevent the interior of the tent from heating up as a result of the rays which emit from the sun.
  • Make sure your tent is big enough for all of the people staying in it and their gear. A well-packed tent will take up a greater amount of room which can prevent good ventilation. Remember, a three-person tent will not be big enough for 3 people and all their gear. A good rule is to double the number of people to get what size tent you need.

What type of AC unit do I need?

There are two types of AC unit. The first is the traditional model which required electric hook-up and an air flow filtration system. This takes longer to set up and requires extra maintenance. The benefit of this unit is that they tend to be more durable and have a longer battery life.

The second is the portable AC unit. The recent advancements in battery technology make these a really useful and practical option. You will get long lasting battery life which produces little noise – perfect for the campsite. Furthermore, many of the best tent air conditioners will also have added functionality making them good all-round products.

Can you put an air conditioner in a tent?

If your campsite has an electric hook-up, almost any air conditioner will do – as long as it has enough power to do this job effectively. For 200 feet of tent, you will need a unit rated around 5000BTU. This will keep you cool throughout hotter weather.

How do you put an air conditioner in a tent?

For a portable AC unit all you need to do is place the unit on table and switch it on. For the best results, make sure the AC unit is elevated and not directly placed on the ground fabric.

For a hook-up AC unit, you will need to use a power source. Give that these units are powerful pieces of kit you will definitely need to elevate it off the floor. Make sure you use a camping AC stand. Then you need to place it in the dedicated slot in the tent and switch it on.

For more information, there is a great video which you can watch here.

What is a ground vent on a tent?

A ground vent is designed to provide ventilation for the tent. This is a constant flow of air which keeps your tent cool and damp free. A ground vent on a tent can be used as the air conditioner port. A ground vent also gives you electric port access to the inside of the tent without unzipping the door and/or windows.

Conclusion: Tent With AC Port

Our favourite tent with AC port is the Coleman Steel Creek. We are high on this option because it is a versatile tent which can be used all year round. Furthermore it comes with a porch area which offers great storage room and even more ventilation. The porch area could also be used as a place to eat and sit on an evening making it a lovely little home away from home. And, if that isn’t enough, it is extremely easy to set up – about 7 minutes according to the manufacturer.

If you are after something slightly bigger the Coleman WeatherMaster is a fantastic option when choosing your best tent with AC port. This 10 person tent is made of excellent fabric and Coleman’s is know for designing their tents with cutting edge technology so this purchase could be one which lasts for years or even decades.

Remember though, you will need to purchase the right AC unit to accompany your tent and the metal stand for it to be placed. You should avoid placing you portable AC unit on the floor of the tent in case there it causes any damage to the fabric.

Make sure you check out our blog post on the camping air conditioners. It will guide you through everything you need to go with your tent and AC port!
